In history, what is the difference between a long term and a short term factor?

Question:
I am writing a history essay about the reasons for Germany losing the European war. I have written the essay, but I have to say if the reasons I have given, like Hitler invading russia or Germany’s overstretched resources were long or short term factors, but i dont have a clue what a long term or a short term factor is. Can anyone help me?
